Sebastian Gölly
Sebastian Gölly is a scientist at the Department. He has been enthusiastically using the space for interdisciplinarity offered there since his student (assistant) days. After gaining insights into the practice offered by the judiciary and the Constitutional Court, as well as a Master's degree abroad ("Master of Criminology, Criminalistics and Police Science"), he is now once again devoting himself to research and teaching criminal law (including its European and international references) and its interfaces with other subjects and disciplines - especially criminology.
His current research focuses on victim protection and victims' rights, protection against violence, the subjective feeling of (in)security and current areas of crime such as cybercrime and white-collar crime. In doing so, he always attaches importance to references to (criminal) law practice - after all, science should do much more than just produce "dust catchers" for bookshelves...

Selected projects
►CRIMHUM - Modernization of master's degree courses for future judges, prosecutors, investigators taking into account the European standard for human rights, is an ERASMUS+ project coordinated by Prof. Schmölzer. CRIMHUM aims to support the modernization of criminal law curricula at 5 universities in Belarus and Ukraine. The project will focus on the development of graduates' competences (knowledge, skills and attitudes) and provide training, methodological tools and indicators for the evaluation of learning outcomes.
►"Violence in the social environment" - Based on over 5,000 cases that were processed in the participating victim protection centers, it will be investigated whether and to what extent victims of violence in their social environment accept the support offered by victim protection centers, file criminal charges or apply for restraining orders to protect them from violence. In particular, the main motivations behind the decision for or against seeking support or taking these measures are also examined. Sebastian Gölly is conducting this study in cooperation with the violence protection centers in Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria and Tyrol as well as the violence protection center in Vorarlberg. The aim is to gain a better understanding of the motivations of victims of violence in their social environment in order to provide them with better support and protect them from becoming victims in the future.
