On November 1, 2023, Hannes Schütz will take over as Head of the Institute of Criminal Law at the University of Graz from the previous Head of the Department, Gabriele Schmölzer, who now holds the position of Dean of the Faculty of Law.
Hannes Schütz, a graduate of the Juridicum and the Academy of Music in Vienna, brings with him a varied academic career. After graduating in law, he worked as an assistant to Prof. Dr. Manfred Burgstaller at the Department for Criminal Law and Criminology in Vienna. His research focused on topics such as offenses against life and limb, the differentiation between errors of fact and errors of prohibition, recidivism after out-of-court settlements and fundamental questions of diversion. Hannes Schütz habilitated at the University of Vienna in the subjects of criminal law and criminal procedural law before taking up his post as successor to em. Prof. Dr. Peter Schick at the University of Graz.
In an interview, Schütz emphasizes his early enthusiasm for science in general and talks about the gradual development of his passion for criminal law. Schütz strives to pass on his enthusiasm for science to students and wants to show how the law can serve as a means of just conflict resolution and peacekeeping.
