General information

Diploma theses

Diploma theses at the Institute are assigned and supervised by:

  • Univ.-Prof.in Dr.in iur.Gabriele Schmölzer
  • Prof. Dr. iur. Hannes Schütz
  • Associate Professor Dr. Thomas Mühlbacher
  • Assoc. Prof. Mag.a iur. Dr.in iur. Heidelinde Luef-Kölbl
  • ao. Univ.-Prof. Mag.a iur. Dr.iur Robert Durl

In exceptional cases also by

  • Hon. Prof. Dr. Heimo Lambauer
  • em. Prof. Dr. Peter J. Schick

For the assignment of a topic from the subject "Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure Law and Criminology", positive completion of the course "Case Solution Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law" and the lecture examination "Substantive Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law" is strongly recommended, so that mastery of the subject can be assumed.

Students are expected to develop their own topic proposals and carry out a search for these in UGO, the search engine of the Austrian Library Network (OBVSG) and the institute's index. Only then should they contact a supervisor during a consultation hour (Prof. Schmölzer by e-mail).

After the written confirmation of supervision, students should have the thesis topic entered in the institute's file (at the institute's secretariat - Ms. Visnar's office). The document announcing the thesis topic must be completed and signed by the supervisor. Further information can be found on the Dean's Office website.

The development of a thesis outline by the student takes place independently and is accompanied by one or more outline discussions with the supervisor until the outline is approved.

Supervision is offered during office hours (Prof. Schmölzer also by e-mail). The possibility of alternative appointments must be discussed with the supervisors.

Please clarify any questions regarding the research, the writing of the thesis and the desired citation style with your supervisor.

Once the thesis has been uploaded to UGO, it will be reviewed by your supervisor within two months. Further information regarding the submission process can be found on the Dean's Office website.

After completion of the thesis, a defensio takes place in the form of a discussion on sensitive issues of the thesis. Prof.Schmölzer 's diploma seminar must be attended for this purpose.

According to the new curriculum (22W), a diploma examination must be taken instead of a defensio. Further information regarding the registration form can be found on the Dean's Office website.

Dissertations

Dissertations at the Institute are awarded and supervised by:

  • Prof. Dr. iur. Gabriele Schmölzer
  • Prof. Dr. iur. Hannes Schütz
  • Prof. Dr. iur. Thomas Mühlbacher
  • Assoc. Prof. Mag.a iur. Dr.in iur. Heidelinde Luef-Kölbl
  • ao. Prof. Mag.a iur. Dr. iur Robert Durl

In exceptional cases also by

  • Hon. Prof. Dr. Heimo Lambauer
  • Professor emeritus Dr. Peter J. Schick

Proof of general university entrance qualification for admission to the doctoral programme is deemed to have been provided by proof of completion of a relevant diploma or master's degree programme, a relevant university of applied sciences diploma programme or university of applied sciences master's degree programme or another equivalent course of study at a recognized domestic or foreign post-secondary educational institution. In any case, graduates of a diploma program in law at a domestic university have the general university entrance qualification for the doctoral program in law. For more details, see the curriculum for the doctoral program in law (09W).

Students are expected to develop their own suggestions for topics and carry out a search for these in UGO, in the search engine of the Austrian Library Network (OBVSG). Only then should they contact a supervisor in a consultation hour (Prof.Schmölzer by e-mail).

The development of a thesis outline by the student takes place independently and is accompanied by one or more outline discussions with the respective chosen supervisor until the outline is approved.

Supervision is offered during office hours (Prof.Schmölzer also by e-mail). The possibility of alternative appointments must be discussed with the supervisors.

Please clarify any questions regarding the research, the writing of the thesis and the desired citation style with your supervisor.

Supervisors have four months after submission of the dissertation to review it. Further information regarding the submission process can be found on the Dean's Office website.

After positive assessment of the dissertation and positive completion of all courses in the dissertation and specialization subject, the doctoral candidate must take the viva voce in the form of an oral examination before the doctoral committee. This consists of the defense of the dissertation (defensio dissertationis) and the examination of the doctoral candidate's knowledge of the dissertation subject.
